The environmental impact of aviation occurs because aircraft engines emit heat, noise, particulates and gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), water vapor, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, lead, and black carbon which interact among themselves and contribute to climate change and global dimming.
Comprehensive research shows that despite anticipated efficiency innovations to airframes, engines, aerodynamics and flight operations, there is no end in sight, even many decades out, to rapid growth in CO2 emissions from air travel and airfreight primarily due to projected continual growth in air travel. Unless market constraints are put in place, this growth in aviation's emissions will result in the sector's emissions amounting to all or nearly the entire annual global CO2 emissions budget by mid-century.
Changing the fuel source is thus one of the few options the aviation industry has for reducing its carbon footprint. As per NASA a 50% aviation biofuel mixture can cut air pollution caused by air traffic by 50-70%.
After biofuels were approved for commercial use in July 2011 post multi-year technical reviews from aircraft makers, engine manufacturers and oil companies, the focus of the industry has now turned to second generation sustainable biofuels (sustainable aviation fuels) that do not compete with food supplies nor are major consumers of prime agricultural land or fresh water.
However, many of the advanced jet biofuels still remain in pre- or an early commercial stage of development and need innovations and breakthrough for low cost sustainable production.
In light of the above, the Global Sustainable Aviation Fuels Summit (GSAFS 2019) aims to bring together national, regional & global stakeholders from the aviation &biojet fuel sectors to take collaborate, share best practices and build consensus on the actions needed to move forward.
The Summit will build on existing knowledge of experts & industry stakeholders defining clear areas of collaboration including policies for market development, innovations, research, cost reduction, commercialization & large scale deployment
It also strives to be a focused networking forum, providing you with the opportunity to meet and interact with the leading experts, researchers, friends and colleagues and key industry partners.
From policy updates, global trends, production pathways, off-take agreements to supply chain efficiencies, GSAFS 2019's dynamic technical sessions would help you identify and optimize outcomes, reduce risks, increase efficiencies and foster sustainability.
Join us at GSAFS 2019 & gain insights from global sustainable aviation & biofuel champions !!
